Best 2009 Diaries Make Great Gifts

Review of the Most Entertaining and Unusual Diaries Around

Nov 25, 2008 Elaine Walker

A look at 2 different but equally unusual diaries to give as gifts this year. Packed with funny pictures and fascinating facts, there's one for him and one for her.

For men and women friends, these are the best 2009 diaries around. They are great entertainment value, good enough to curl up with for half an hour on the sofa, as well as being useful. Both would make Ideal gifts

For Her : BookDiary 2009

BookDiary looks like a slightly large paperback book and contains 223 pages, including quirky full colour photographs. (Check out the plumber on page 102.) This is one of the best 2009 diaries for any woman who loves reading and all things literary. The diary begins each month with a list of the birthdays of famous authors followed by profiles of 1 or 2 writers. Salman Rushdie and Doris Lessing rub shoulders with Tolstoy and Hemmingway.

As if that were not enough, there are also themed lists of books. For example, in February there is a list called Fiction for Food Lovers that includes

  • Chocolat by Joanne Harris
  • The Food of Love by Anthony Capella
  • Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant by Anne Tyler
  • Pratt a Manger by David Nobbs

The pages are peppered with the expected literary quotes, but fear not, there is also the obligatory diary space for noting appointments, a week to a page. Not a great deal of space, but there are further blank pages for jottings.

Final pages are given to New Years Resolutions, Notes and a Contacts list.

For Him: The Idler’s Diary 2009

The Idler’s Diary has a colourful paperback-styled cover that immediately evokes restful British summer days of old, with a jester giving a clue as to the humour packed between the pages. There are cartoons (some very silly), beautiful illustrations in full colour, poems (including An Ode on Indolence by John Keats), recipes, and amusing pieces on topics as diverse as the Joys of the Dressing Gown and The Ukulele.

Further on in the diary there is a “ukulele singalong” showing how to play the chords for the 12 Days of Christmas followed by a recipe for Spiced Punch which starts with 2 quarts of apple cider.

Funny Diary

A perfect 2009 diary for a man with a sense of humour, and especially meaningful for those who would like to slow down and enjoy life a little more, but cannot or dare not. The ubiquitous literary quotes on these pages are themed with idleness. The first week of June has this quote from Jerome K Jerome : “It is impossible to enjoy idling thoroughly unless one has plenty of work to do.”

The Idler's Diary generously displays a week over 2 pages, cleanly designed, and adds a memorandum area. A useful 2010 Year Planner is included at the back.

What great gift ideas - they are out of the ordinary, slightly quirky and sure to be a hit with the person lucky enough to receive it. They are also affordable at a time when we are all counting the costs but still looking for that special gift.

With so many diaries on the market it's great to have some 'insiders knowledge'. I will certainly check these out.

Wow! A literary one for her, and an indolent one for him, -even a funny one. These break the pattern of dull old Collins. Something to look forward to, day by day. Solved some Christmas shopping. Many thanks!
