The 2008 Writer's Market is the best-selling book of writing markets. It guides novelists, poets and non-fiction writers in finding publishers.

The Writer's Market has been a trusted resource for the latest publishing markets for 85 years. The book is updated every year to keep up with the changes in the publishing world. Every year some publishers change their writer's guidelines or even whether they are accepting manuscripts. The 2008 Writer's Market has about 4,000 markets for writers, including magazines, book publishers and agents. The 2008 version has 600 more listings than the 2007, making it well worth buying the new edition.

The book contains much more than just markets and agents-- it also contains writing advice and a guide to the rates charged by freelancers. The chapters on publishing and querying publishers give advice from industry experts on the best way to get works published.

Freelance Market Organization

The book is divided into specific maket types. There are sections devoted to larger book publishers and small presses. The consumer magazine section is divided by subject matter. From animals to women's magazines, the section contains magazine markets of all sizes. Both the book and magazine market listings contain the basic writer's guidelines of that market. It also contains the range of payments that can be expected from each market.

The trade journals section includes the magazines that are circulated within specific industries. There are also screenwriting, playwriting and newpaper market sections. A large contests and awards sections outlines the many writing contests that accept submissions.

To find specific types of markets quickly, there is a large index in the back. The index arranges the markets by various genres. A second index arranges the markets by the publisher names.

The Writer's Market Deluxe Edition

To get even more updated information on publishers, there is the Deluxe Edition. This edition is more expensive than the regular edition, but it includes a code for the Writer's Market website. The code is good for a one year subscription to the website. The site is updated every day as changes occur to the various markets covered. There are also new markets added regularly throughout the year.

Freelance Writing Website

The website itself is accessible even without a purchase of the book. The membership without the code is $29.99 for one year. As the markets are updated and added, an email is sent out to members of the website. There is also an area of the site for writers to store their query and submission information. This makes it easier to keep track of when inquiries should be made. Writers can also set up reminders through the site and receive email reminders when tasks need to be done.
